| My father, Cpl. Paul Emile Mondor (1916-1974), was a
Hong Kong Veteran.
He enlisted in the army in 1940 at the age of 24.
He served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in the
Battle
to defend Hong Kong in 1941 and was a POW of the Japanese from the fall of Hong Kong on December 25, 1941 until August 17, 1945.
My father was held prisoner in Hong Kong until Dec 1943 and was taken to the Oeyama camp in Japan
where he worked in a nickel mine until he was liberated following the Victory over Japan on August 15, 1945.
He weighed 138 pounds when captured and was down to 98 pounds when liberated.

My father was discharged from the Army January 26, 1946. He married my mother in April 1947
and together they had 10 children (7 boys and 3 girls). I am the youngest boy. The following is
a picture of my parents on their wedding day.
My father passed away November 26, 1974 at the age of 58 and he was layed to rest in Willow Bunch.

The medals are (from left to right):
- Canadian Legion Past President (Willow Bunch Branch)
- 1939-45 STAR: Dark blue, red and light blue in three equal
vertical stripes. This ribbon is worn with the dark blue
stripe furthest from the left shoulder.
- PACIFIC STAR: Dark green with red edges, a central yellow
stripe, and two narrow stripes, one dark blue, the other
light blue. This ribbon is worn with the dark blue stripe
furthest from the left shoulder.
- CANADIAN VOLUNTEER SERVICE MEDAL: Green, scarlet, royal blue,
scarlet, green; each green and scarlet stripe three-sixteenths
of an inch wide (worn marching figures to the front).
CLASP OR EMBLEM - A SILVER CLASP WITH MAPLE LEAF EMBLEM IN RELIEF.
- WAR MEDAL 1939-45: A narrow central red stripe with a narrow white
stripe at either side. A broad red stripe at either edge, and two
intervening blue stripes.
- DEFENCE MEDAL: Flame coloured with green edges, upon each of which
is a narrow black stripe.
