Java Required
Some of the pages on my web site, like this one, now require that you have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your PC or they won't be displayed properly.

I use a Java Applet to make it easier to pan left and right through wide panoramic images. The example picture below is of an amazing sunset in Calgary. If you have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your PC, you will see this picture and it will be scrolling slowly to the right. If you click on this picture with your left mouse button the scrolling will stop and you can manually drag the picture left and right with your mouse. If you want to re-start the automatic scrolling, just click on the picture with your right mouse button. If you don't click on the picture it will scroll to the right as far as it can then it will start scrolling to the left, then back to the right and so on forever. Note that applet has some simple build in help information that can be accessed by clicking on the text in the top left of the picture.

Error: Java Runtime Environment not found.

If you don't see the sunset picture above and instead you see something like "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page.", or "Click here to download plugin.", or you just see a blank gray area where the picture is supposed to be then you likely need to install the Java Runtime Environment.

You can install the Java Runtime Environment by going to java.com and following the instructions there. Those instructions may vary depending on which browser you have. If you are using Internet Explorer you may be able to use the automatic installation, otherwise you will have to use the manual process which is quite simple as summarized below:

  1. Go to java.com
  2. Click on the Download button next to Windows (Offline Installation) (that should be the second Download button from the top).
  3. Save the jre-1_5_0_05-windows-i586-p.exe file to your desktop or some other temporary location.
  4. Close your Browser and run jre-1_5_0_05-windows-i586-p.exe to install the Java Runtime Environment (you should be able to accept all the default installation options).
  5. Open your Browser and come back to this page to confirm that everything is working fine or go back to java.com and click on Verify Installation button there.
  6. You can delete jre-1_5_0_05-windows-i586-p.exe now if you want.
