The most interesting building in Oberwesel. The village of Oberwesel is about half way between Bacharach and St Goar.

The section of the Rhine between Oberwesel and St Goar is the difficult to navigate by boat. It is the narrowest section of the river, making the water flow up about 10 kph, and it has some of the tightest curves. Because of this many big barges need tug boats to help them up stream through this area. The is one of the tug boats.

A few photos of the Burg Rheinfels castle. This castle, like many old castles or other stone building throughout Europe, was used for many years as a quarry and stones from this castle where used in the construction of other buildings. As a result, what we see of this castle is only a small portion of the original structure which was the largest on the Rhine.

That's the high point on the castle, providing great views of the surrounding area.

That's my bike down there. The deck where I stopped for a beer is just straight ahead behind the building below.

This concludes my stay in Bacharach and the Rhine valley. Tomorrow I will be heading to Berlin. I contemplating heading south to Rothenburg (another well preserved medieval town) first, but I only have about 3 days of slack in my schedule between now and when I return to Canada at the beginning of August and I don't want to use it up just yet, especially after talking with the couple from Norway and hearing about the scenery up there. Oh, so much to see, so little time.
