| Today was a quiet day. It started out with a rather long
breakfast in the hotel talking with a couple from Victoria, BC.
They are on a fairly lengthy vacation as well. They started with a cruise
from Florida to the Mediterranean, spent the last 5 days in Barcelona,
and are now working they way slowly to Hungary where they will be
visiting with relatives. She is a native of Vancouver Island. He is
originally from Hungary, but moved to the Victoria area back in
1957.
Like many of the other folks I've met so far, this couple
does a lot of traveling. Last year the did a coast to coast trip
across Canada like I did, but they had an RV. In the past they've
driven up to Alaska and down to Baja Mexico in there RC and they've been to
Europe many times before with several interesting stories to tell.
After breakfast, I got caught up on a bit of booking, sorting through
a couple weeks of receipts seeing how I'm doing compared to my budget.
So far, so good. After that I went out to check on bike and car rentals
for exploring the country side around Arles.
The bike rental place
had a bunch of interesting looking bikes, from a chopper style to
electric mountain bikes. However, due to the distances I need to cover
and the hills in the surrounding area, I decided to go with a car. I'll
pick it up in the morning.
On the way to the bike rental place I stopped by a cemetery which
I spotted the first night I was here from up near the amphitheater.
The cemetery is quite different than those we are used to out in western
Canada. All the graves are actually sarcophagi packed right next to each other
just like all the buildings in the center of Arles.
While searching for a car rental, I was over at the train station so
I also looked into my options for getting to my next destination, Cinq Terre,
the Italian Riviera.
I also took in a couple places I missed yesterday, the Van Gogh Foundation
and the Eglise Saint Trophine, before finding a patio for a beer.
After the beer I went off for some dinner at yet another place near the
amphitheater. This place may be small, but it sure has a good selection
of places to eat. On my way to dinner I met up briefly with the couple from Kansas
again. At dinner I sat next to a couple from north of Paris. They didn't speak
much English, but we managed to carry on a short conversation away. They've been
coming down to Arles for a vacation every year for the last 5 years.
Today was one of my quietest in terms of picture taking. Here's just a few.
One of the two bike rental places in Arles. The other was closed today.
One of their very cool looking bikes that resemble a chopper.
Their electric mountain bikes!

A view inside Eglise Saint Trophine. This church had some nice stained glassed windows
and other interesting features, however it was very damp and smelly inside kind of
like the basement of an old house.
This is another picture of the Cafe made famous by the Vincent van Gogh painting. The
angle of this photo is more in line with that used in his painting.
